A competitor and customer of the Federal Reserve’s Fedwire service, CHIPS allows banks to make international payment transfers efficiently, as they do not require bank checks.
Regarding large transactions, CHIPS is the primary clearinghouse in the United States. The average settlement is over $1 trillion daily using electronic bookkeeping entries. The average transaction using CHIPS is over $3,000,000.
Many people prefer CHIPS to Fedwire service because it is more affordable, although not as fast. Transfers can be made internationally or domestically but are usually made in large amounts.
CHIPS Limitations
One main limitation of CHIPS is that it only operates from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm—eastern time. In 2016, there were only 48 CHIPS member banks, while approximately 50,000 member banks used the Fedwire system.
