The Best Way To Transfer PC Games To Another Hard Drive
You can transfer your library of PC games to another drive if your hard drive is filling up. There needs to be more space left on a moderately sized drive after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which had over 200GB at launch due to the growth of SSDs and games. You can transfer some of your games to a second hard drive with greater capacity without re-downloading them if you’re ready to give up some lightning-fast loading times.
You can move your games between locations using the built-in features of some game clients, such as Steam. Relating a game’s data in some places, like the Epic Games Store, takes a little skill. Here’s how to configure the move from your preferred game
How To Transfer PC Games To Another Hard Drive
Most of the digital collection sits in Steam, happily making moving your games simple. Navigate to the Downloads tab in the sidebar by selecting Steam > Settings in the upper-left corner of the main window. To access the Storage Manager, choose Steam Library Folders at the top of the new window.
Select the location for your secondary install by clicking the Plus button next to your existing drive. Once you click Add, the brand-new folder will show up next to your first drive. You will now have the option between your pre-selected library folders when installing a new game. I store the games I’m currently playing on my SSD, and I keep older, slower-spinning hard drive games for when I want to revisit them.
Return to the Storage Manager and choose the games to relocate any installed games. After selecting the appropriate Steam folder, click Move once more. If the game’s files are large, this could take some time. When it’s finished, Steam will smoothly launch the game.
2. GOG Galaxy
In addition to allowing you to download and instal games from GOG.com, GOG Galaxy wants to be your one-stop shop for all of your game collections. There is no built-in button to relocate downloaded games to a new folder, but you can alter the location where games are placed.
Open Settings > Installing, updating, and choose Game installation folder by clicking the gear icon in the top-left corner. Future games will be saved in the location you select. This functionality can be manipulated to relocate downloaded games to a different location.
To move a game, open File Explorer and go to the installation location for GOG Galaxy, which is by default C:Program Files (x86)GOG GalaxyGames. Right-click the game’s folder, then copy and paste it to your new directory, such D:GamesGOG, while you wait for the data to transfer.
Once you’ve completed that, launch GOG Galaxy, right-click the game, and select Manage Installation > Uninstall. There will be a message alerting you that the game cannot be removed.
When prompted, select the location where you copied the game files (D:GamesGOG). When you click on the game again to install it. Once it realizes the game’s installation files are already present, it will start installing the game immediately and finish swiftly without downloading the game’s installation files again.
